Stuck Waiting on Windows Update

In recent months, Microsoft has been having occasional hiccups when pushing out updates. These hiccups take the form of Windows getting stuck in a screen telling you that it is installing updates and never really finishing (See screenshot below).

The message on the screen is pretty scary, and warns you not to unplug or power off your machine. However, after several hours of this many users usually end up doing just that. In most cases, this screen is actually out of date, and Windows is actually ready to log on. If you encounter this screen and see no changes for a half hour or more you can try typing Ctrl+Alt+Del and if Windows is actually done, you will get your login screen.
