How to Find Your Lost iPhone or iPad (and Even Wipe It If Needed!)

A few weeks ago Kris wrote about How To Find Your Android Phone.  If however, you have lost your iPhone, iPad or Mac, you would normally have 2 main concerns. First, is to simply find it! Second, if you realize that most likely it has been stolen, your concern turns to your privacy and data being exposed.

That is when remote find/wipe comes in handy! Using iCloud, you can setup Find My iPhone!

How to set it up:

  • On your device’s Home screen, tap Settings, then tap iCloud. If you’re asked to sign in, enter your Apple ID. If you don’t have one, tap Create a new Apple ID, then follow the instructions.

  • If Find My iPhone (or Find My iPad or Find My iPod) is turned off, tap Find My iPhone, then tap to turn it on.

  • Tap to turn on Send Last Location.

To erase your device remotely:

  • Go to Find My iPhone on iCloud.com. If you don’t see Find My iPhone on iCloud.com, your account just has access to iCloud web-only features. To gain access to other iCloud features, set up iCloud on your iOS device or Mac.

  • Click All Devices, then select the device you want to erase.

  • In the device’s Info window, click Erase [device].

  • To erase: An iOS device: Enter your Apple ID password or your family member’s Apple ID password. If the device you’re erasing has iOS 7 or later, enter a phone number and message. The number and message are displayed on the screen after the device is erased.

Now to the fun part! Would you like to find your friends and let them find you?! Yes, it is doable! Here’s how:

  • Install the free Find My Friends app on a device using iOS 8 or later.

  • Your friend also needs Find My Friends on a device using iOS 8 or later.

  • To add your friend, open Find My Friends and tap Add. Choose a friend or enter your friend’s email address, then tap Done to send the request.

  • After your friend agrees to share their location with you using Find My Friends, you can see that friend’s location on a list or on a map.
