Is your business prepared with a disaster recovery plan?

May 21 2015

disaster-recoveryWe all know the idiom “better safe than sorry”. But with rapid economic changes, who is actually willing to invest in a disaster prevention or recovery solution? The main challenge is to implement cost effective solutions that would not require over spending, yet prepares your IT infrastructure for the unexpected.

When you first hear the word “disaster”, some would think you need to be living in a country that is part of the Ring of Fire (earthquake belt), to invest in a disaster readiness plan! From environmental factors, human errors to even intentionally caused damage, many things can go wrong! The consequences for your IT Infrastructure can be a real pain with really high costs.

One example of environmental factors is the freezing rain storm, that lasted only for a couple of hours, which occurred in March 2015, or the ice storm that hit southern Ontario in December 2013. Both caused severe damage to electric appliances and equipment.

Another type of disaster, which could easily affect your IT infrastructure, is Ransomware. It is a type of malicious software which has become more common recently. It infects a computer system and blocks access to the system or data files. It can be just one click on a malicious link, received by email, to get your servers infected. Although Ransomware initially targeted individuals it has spread and has recently infected businesses as well. In some cases the entire data on servers was encrypted and became unusable as a result of being infected by Ransomware. If affected companies have not invested in proper backup solutions, their main option would have been to negotiate with the creators of the Ransomware. In some cases people, other than Ransomware creators, use the malicious software to infect a network, then even when paid the ransom, do not provide the decryption keys because they do not actually have them!

So, what’s the solution? Solutions differ from one IT infrastructure to another but the main challenge is to develop a cost effective solution that is right-sized for your business needs. It might be as simple as installing a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), with a surge protector, as a safeguard for your infrastructure. Your business might need a corporate class antivirus, an efficient antispam, or an onsite or offsite backup solution. You might require more complex cloud based solutions or one that depends on virtualization. Again, it’s all about right-sizing a solution that would meet your business needs while being cost effective at the same time.
